What are some good mystery/crime books?

I want to read some really good and interesting mystery/crime books. I would like some that could be brought in Barns and Noble. Got anything? ThanksWhat are some good mystery/crime books?
I like Robert Ludlum, he's got some good books. He writes CIA, BI, type books that are action packed. To view a review I just did on one of his books, check out the linkWhat are some good mystery/crime books?
If you like the Holmes stories, I'm guessing that at least part of what appeals to you might be the byplay between the sleuth and the sidekick. Especially if the sleuth is brilliant but eccentric and only half-socialized and the sidekick is a little thick but thoroughly decent. If that's what does appeal to you, I would suggest the following partnerships:

Inspector Morse/Sergeant Lewis -- The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn by Colin Dexter

Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin (although Archie is by no means thick and not really all that decent) -- The League of Frightened Men by Rex Stout

Commissaire Adamsberg/Capitaine Adrien Danglard -- Wash This Blood Clean From My Hand by Fred Vargas

Nick Charles/Nora Charles -- The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett

Sergeant Cribb/Constable Thackery -- Swing, Swing Together by Peter Lovesey

Hercule Poirot/Captain Hastings (although Hastings is almost too thick and Poirot is almost too eccentric) -- ABC Murders by Agatha Christie

Many more, but that might do for starters. What are some good mystery/crime books?
